What are metal braces?

Metal braces use brackets and wires to exert gentle pressure on your teeth. Over time, this pressure adjusts the positions of your teeth. Metal braces work for a variety of orthodontic concerns, including complex problems like cross bites or protruding teeth. We can even use metal braces to correct multiple issues at once. Braces are worn for anywhere from one to three years, with tough realignment situations requiring the longest treatment times. We recommend metal braces for patients of all ages who want to correct their teeth, enhance their oral health, and improve their smile.

What to expect when using metal braces

Metal braces do require you to make dietary changes. You’ll want to stay away from sticky or chewy foods, like caramel, gum, and gummies. Avoid crunchy foods that can damage your braces. Brush and floss your teeth after each meal. The wires and brackets can trap food particles that will cause decay if they aren’t removed. Most patients need to see us every four to six weeks so we can adjust their braces and monitor their progress. After you get your braces taken off, you should wear a retainer to help your teeth hold their new positions.

What’s the process for getting metal braces?

First, we take x-rays and examine your teeth to determine your orthodontic needs and offer recommendations for your treatment plan. When it’s time to start your orthodontic treatment, we use dental glue to attach the brackets for your metal braces onto your teeth. Then, we attach archwires that help reposition your teeth. It’s normal for your mouth to feel sore when you first get braces or after we tighten or adjust your braces. Over-the-counter pain medication can help alleviate your discomfort.

What are the benefits?

There are several benefits associated with using metal braces:

Metal braces are an affordable orthodontic treatment

Traditional metal braces are one of the most budget-conscious options for addressing orthodontic issues. Some insurance plans may cover a portion of the cost. Metal braces can prevent the need for costly, intensive orthodontic treatments, like jaw surgery.

Treatment with metal braces is effective

One reason that metal braces are so frequently used is that they’re a fast, effective treatment for straightening teeth and fixing jaw and bite problems.

They improve your long-term dental health

There are a lot of dental problems associated with crooked teeth or teeth with improper spacing. Crowded teeth are hard to keep clean, increasing your chances of experiencing tooth decay and cavities. You’re also at a higher risk of experiencing gum disease and jaw pain if your orthodontic problems are left untreated.
