Fillings | Queens, Brooklyn, New York
Fillings are a restorative dental treatment that uses materials such as porcelain, composite resin, or silver amalgam to repair your child's teeth.
What Are Dental Fillings?
Fillings can be used to treat both primary teeth and adult teeth. Just because your child has baby teeth that will eventually fall out doesn't mean that cavities or tooth decay should go untreated. An untreated cavity can cause the tooth to shed prematurely, making the other permanent teeth drift around, causing overcrowding and spacing issues. Pain associated with a cavity can affect your child's quality of life even before it affects teeth. Decay might also transmit to other teeth, resulting in more cavities.
The procedure for filling a tooth
In most cases, the filling procedures are done under local anesthesia. When the anesthesia takes effect and the child's mouth is well-numbed, the decayed part of the tooth is drilled and removed with a drill or dental instrument. Bacteria and debris are then washed away so that the tooth is prepared for the filling. There may be a liner if the cavity was deep and close to the nerve of the tooth, and then the filling material is introduced. The protocol for placing the filling will depend on the material used. For instance, composite resin is applied in thin layers, first hardened with a special light. After the filling, we then trim any excess filling and polish the tooth for a natural appearance.
What to expect after a filling procedure
Fillings do not require any special care afterward. Your child can brush and floss normally, and eating and drinking is allowed when the local anesthesia wears off. A filled tooth may feel sensitivity when exposed to hot/cold foods and drinks or excessively sugary items. This sensitivity should subside within a few weeks.
What are the advantages?
Fillings offer plenty of advantages for our patients:
Stops cavity from further spreading
With this, cavities do not spread and affect the child's other teeth and their gum tissues. If left untreated, cavities may create infection and inflammation eventually leading to more serious dental issues.
The step restores the structure of your child's tooth
Fillings restore your child's tooth so that it works as though it were normal. The materials we use for fillings are strong and resilient, providing restorative protection for many years.
Addresses affordability
Fillings, being an economical treatment option for treating your child's broken teeth, are usually third-party insurance-operable, and rehabilitation of teeth having a long life span makes this treatment an intelligent choice for one's child.
