What are ceramic braces?
Ceramic braces are also known as clear braces. They use brackets and wires like traditional metal braces, but the materials for the wires and brackets ensure that the braces blend in with your teeth. The brackets for ceramic braces are less noticeable than metal braces, and we can use a tooth-colored wire to make them even more inconspicuous.
It takes ceramic braces between one and three years to correct orthodontic issues. They’re capable of fixing complex orthodontic problems, including jaw misalignment, extremely crooked teeth, and bite problems. We can also combine ceramic braces with metal braces; for example, we might use ceramic braces on your upper teeth and metal braces on your lower teeth. Some patients choose this option to lower the cost of their braces (ceramic braces are usually more expensive than metal braces) while minimizing the impact on their smile.
What to expect with ceramic braces
Ceramic braces are less durable than metal braces, making it essential for you to avoid foods that have the potential to damage your braces, like hard, crunchy foods or foods with a sticky texture. The material is also more prone to staining, making regular brushing and flossing even more important, especially if you regularly enjoy beverages with a high likelihood of causing staining, like tea or dark soda.
What’s the process for getting ceramic braces?
First, we’ll examine your teeth and take x-rays to determine your orthodontic treatment plan. We’ll glue the ceramic brackets to your teeth and connect the brackets with an archwire. Depending on your orthodontic needs, we may use rubber bands to help with repositioning your teeth or jaw. Over time, we adjust and tighten the wire to assist with repositioning your teeth. When it’s time to get your ceramic braces off, you need to wear a retainer to prevent your teeth from moving back into their old positions.
What are the benefits?
Ceramic braces have numerous benefits that make them an attractive alternative for many patients:
They’re less noticeable than metal braces
Ceramic braces are less noticeable than metal braces, making them ideal for patients who want to minimize the impact of braces on their smile and appearance.
Ceramic braces won’t interfere with imaging tests
If you anticipate undergoing an MRI of your neck and head, ceramic braces are safe for these imaging tests and don’t require removal.
Your orthodontic treatment is fast and efficient
Ceramic braces can help you reduce the length of your orthodontic treatment while having minimal impact on your appearance. When compared to clear aligners, ceramic braces shift your teeth faster, offering more rapid results.
